The Challenge
When our client initially discovered small quantities of fibrous asbestos on their project, they immediately engaged SoilEx to ensure they were managing the issue in line with the asbestos regulations to ensure the safety of those on site and in the surrounding area. When much higher quantities of the contaminant were discovered during initial excavation SoilEx were engaged fully on the project to assist with the waste management and remedial activities. On a tight site, surrounded by residential properties, it was imperative that the process was conducted in a manner that ensured the safety of all involved.
The Solution
SoilEx conducted a review of the project and proposed 3 separate options to Mulalley to manage the waste and remediation effectively. Due to site and time restrictions it was decided the most effective and risk-free solution was to remove the contaminated waste directly from the site. SoilEx introduced an asbestos contractor to the project to manage the watching brief, air monitoring and compliance aspects as we removed circa 1700m3 of waste soils on sealed tipper lorries to an off-site treatment facility. During the process SoilEx conducted compliance testing to ensure the contamination had been completely removed and the site had met its remedial objectives.
The Result
All contaminated waste was removed (avoiding disposal to landfill in the process) in a safe and compliant manner, and in line with the sites program. Furthermore, no exceedances in the air monitoring results were noted, meaning all on and around the site were kept safe. Our client said, “Soilex were a professional and proactive company to work with. Initially creating a methodology and management plan, all the way through to organising the complete disposal off-site of the contaminated ground on our project. Alex (Madden) was a brilliant support throughout.” Jack Hayward – Senior Quantity Surveyor
