Promoting the compliant and sustainable re-use of excavated soils

The UK construction sector generates and disposes of vast amounts of waste soils every year—but is there a smarter, more sustainable way to manage them?

Within The Definition of Waste Code of Practice (DoWCoP), developed by CL:AIRE, there are two key ways to reuse excavated soils:

Site of Origin – Reusing soils, even if contaminated, on the same site where they were excavated.

Direct Transfer – Moving clean, naturally occurring soils from one site to another.

Reusing soils, whether on site or elsewhere, offers significant environmental and commercial advantages. At SoilEx, we provide an end-to-end service so your project can realise these benefits efficiently and compliantly.

We have partnered with SoilEx for several years and their support has been invaluable in allowing our business to deliver better value and secure more complex work with our Tier 1 clients.

At Harringtons we pride ourselves on the quality we deliver, and with SoilEx working throughout our whole business I know we will manage our waste as well as anyone in the industry.

The SoilEx Approach

To help your business to utilise the benefits of soil re-use SoilEx can:

  • Provide an initial assessment of whether soil re-use is appropriate, compliant and viable
  • Source donor and receiver sites and manage the process from start to finish, including commercial agreements and haulage
  • Produce Materials Management Plans and any other required supporting information required to ensure compliance
  • Gain Qualified Person (QP) sign off of the MMP
  • Complete and submit the required Verification report(s)
  • Complete the process quickly, because we know that time is often crucial to realise the opportunity to re-use soils.
