The Challenge
SoilEx Environmental were engaged by a leading national construction company to assist with an ongoing project at a well-known west London football clubs’ ground. The task was to deal with all aspects of soil contamination and waste management across a 10,000m3 excavation, with a variety of contamination issues across multiple locations and depths.
The Solution
Ground investigation work commissioned by the main contractor sampled over 70 areas of the site, with over 20% of the results presenting hazardous levels of heavy metal or hydrocarbon contamination. The contamination was not concentrated in one area, providing a challenge for the construction company to ensure accurate waste segregation as they excavated across the site. SoilEx proposed the use of Rapid Measure Testing (RMT) to provide instant waste classification on site to manage this process effectively.
The Result
All excavated soils left site with the correct classification and were disposed of at an appropriate waste facility. Around 5% of this waste was consigned as hazardous as the RMT was able to more accurately delineate the hotspots that were thought to make up over 20% of the total volume. The end result demonstrated how improved process and compliance can also mean major cost savings for the client.
